Fahl & Folk

The band Fahl & Folk is the newest vehicle for David Fahl’s music.   The basic sound is the traditional folkie vocal, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, accompanied by a varying cast of characters depending on venue, schedules, and phases of the moon.

The simplest description of Fahl & Folk’s music is “folk-rock with blues and country roots”.   The Fahl & Folk sound is both familiar and innovative. The instrumentation is simple and familiar-sounding.   The songs hit comfortable grooves and go places where folksingers are seldom heard.   Fahl’s songs come from a perspective that uses all the traditions we hear around us and twists them into new combinations, telling stories about lovers, murderers, and the helpless schmoes who just have a hard time dealing with life in this bizarre new millenium.   When the band does a cover tune, it’s rarely one from the standards of ‘classic rock’, and it never sounds like the way you’re used to hearing it.  The most surprising thing about this band’s music is its danceability.

Some of the folks likely to be playing with Fahl at a show in Houston (thereby becoming real “Folk”) are:

Chaz Nadege on a minimalist two-snare drum kit and vocals.  Chaz is one of the finest keyboard players in town, appearing with local blues legends like Sherman Robinson.

Steve Oddo on washtub (pronounced warsh tub) bass and vocals.  Steve is a good friend who recently took up the washtub bass after trying one at Last Concert Café’s Sunday jams.

David Odea plays mandolin and banjo with the group, adding color and exciting solos.

Randy Bowen has recently joined the group on djembe, bongos, and percussion.

Others who may show up to join in include Jodie Gonzales, Opie Hendrix, Carrie Ann Buchanan, Jason Jackson, Carlos Johnson, Bongo Jane Wiley, Kennedy, and several players to be named later.

Fahl & Folk’s upcoming CD, We Meant to Do That (Shoulda Known Better) features the talents of many wonderful unknown Houston musicians, including original Folk Michael Farber on bass; Chaz on keyboards, the very Teri Greene, slidin’ Gary Clark, Opie Hendrix and Jim DePitts on lead guitar; Leesa Harrington-Squires on drums, Susan Jackson on violin & vocals; Jason Jackson on sax; Carrie Ann Buchanan & Rebekah Dahl on vocals.

Fahl & Folk play every Sunday at Last Concert Café in Houston (1403 Nance / 713-226-8563). Show starts at 6pm and usually includes an opening act from among the best of Houston’s acoustic musicians.

They also play happy hour Fridays at DanElectro’s Guitar Bar in Houston ( 1041 E. 24th St. / 713-862-8707), beginning at 6.

Check the calendar page for other shows, we’ll post ‘em when we get ‘em.
